vickie yo

This baker, cookie maker and pun extraordinare has been taking the Instagram world by storm with her cute and quirky creative ventures.  Since uploading her cookies to Instagram, she has baked for a huge array of clients such as; Magnum, Celebrate with Avery, Babble, One Fine Baby, Hooray Mag and collab-ed with some other cool chicks; Bakeddown Cakery and Katherine Sabbath. We caught up and created this fun films for you to enjoy and we also asked her a few questions about her journey, why she bakes and where her creativity comes from.

1) When do you start baking and creating cookies?
I’ve had an interest in baking since high school, but throughout school and university, in addition to work and other commitments, I rarely found the time to bake. After graduating a course I didn’t enjoy, and no full time job, baking became an outlet for me, and I have been addicted ever since!

2) We’ve seen you explode all across Instagram and even a feature on Buzzfeed! How has Instagram/social media played a part on your creativity?

It’s definitely opened up many opportunities, which has encouraged me to create more! I’ve had the chance to work with small businesses, collaborate with other bakers and creatives, and even sell my baked goods on a regular basis. This has indubitably made me a lot more open minded, and therefore having a more refined creative process. vickie

3) Cuteness and shapes seem to be a huge factor in your creativity! Is it hard to always come up with new ideas and where do you get your inspiration from?
I have a ‘to bake’ list, but I find that I revise it quite often! Sometimes I’ll have an idea, but the execution doesn’t go to plan; other times I’ll find it challenging to think of any good ideas at all! I tend to ask friends and family for advice too, which definitely helps my creative process!
Inspiration for my work can come from anywhere and anything! This can range from street art I see down an alley, a pattern on an item of clothing, pop culture, colours from nature, as well as the work of other bakers, designers and creatives.

4) We’ve also seen you’ve done some amazing collaborations, especially with other well known bakers. What’s been your most favourite collaboration so far?
I think it will have to be the recent Studio Ghibli themed cake from my collaboration with Jen (@bakedowncakery). I sent my cookies up to Sydney, where Jen adorned an incredible 3-tier cake with them.
I also loved working on the stop motion videos with you two! Hopefully there will be more to come in the not so distant future.

5) Have you been surprised with the response on social media to your cookies? What do you think is the most appealing aspect about your punny work?
Definitely! When I started sharing my baked goods on Instagram, I didn’t expect anyone besides my friends and family to even look at my work!
I think food and colour can both attract attention quite easily – which are two main features of my Instagram feed. Adding a little bit of humour is just the cherry on top!

6) Do you have any advice for budding bakers/photographers/creatives?
Don’t get too down on yourself if things don’t go as planned, as there is always something new to learn! Just be patient and persevere, because you will definitely get better with experience.
Additionally, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and initiate collaborations! It’s a great way to meet like-minded people, share ideas, and even help each other out with personal projects.

Australia, Food, travel

When our beloved relatives came to Melbourne for Val’s graduation, we knew we had to impress them with our city’s best. So what did we do? Took them out for brunch of course.

it’s a pie day

Throughout last year I distracted myself from studying by looking at food blogs and watching cooking shows. Although that was probably not the most productive use of my time it allowed me to de-stress and fall into a curious love for rhubarb. The vibrant appearance of this stalk only enticed me to wish to bake with it one day. With the fading need to study, I dove into the depths of my curious love by baking one of Vess’ favourite foods; pie. (Which is perfect timing as it was Pie Day last Saturday!)

Grand Trailer Park Taverna

melbourne-trailer-park-tristan (2)

Sometimes being a Melbournian, we think that we’ve seen it all when it comes to the restaurant cafe, foodie scene.

We know the formula for that perfect coffee shop; vintage chairs, rustic interior, large impressive coffee machine. Even for that great burger joint; sort of a throw back diner vibe with a bit of an American touch. True, we’re hardly cafe connoisseur and there’s no way we could be called an expert on the topic, but we’re been around, seen the sights. So truly when we heard about the Grand Trailer Park Taverna, we knew that we had to go and check it out. And boy were we impressed.
