“Please, don’t worry so much, because in the end, none of us have very long on this earth. Life is fleeting, and if you’re ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer sky, and the stars that strung across the velvety night, and when a shooting star streaks through the blackness turning night… into day… make a wish. Think of me. Make your life spectacular. I know I did.”
Robin Williams ‘Jack’ (1996)

On Monday we sadly heard the news of Robin William’s death. The news sparked a sense of shock and disbelief. But following that news was an outpouring of remembrance and a deep appreciation of the man of many voices. It’s incredible the tales that people have been sharing. Stories of his great friendship with gorillas. Stories of how this man impacted their lives through his kindness and generosity. For others it led to a reassessment of the comic genius that he was. Numerous recountings of his standup routines, his comedic timing and his ability to make everyone laugh.

For ourselves, the loss of Robin Williams is met with sadness, but is tinged, surprisingly, with slight joy. A joy that comes from remembering a nutty professor in the film Flubber and remembering the fascination we felt when we watched Peter Pan fly through the sky. It’s a joy that comes from the recollection of the emotions felt from watching this man weave characters and stories together in a exciting, charming and beautiful way.

So, as we bid farewell to a genie, the boy who never grew up, a Scottish nanny and comedic madman, we welcome in the recounting of fond memory of stories that captured our imagination and made us believe that the impossible was possible.

Although we are now in a world that has one less spark in it, we ourselves are invited to keep our sparks shining bright. Be silly, be funny, let laughter come in abundance. And remember dear friends you are always loved.
