Freelance Advice

bigpicture stuff freelance advice with friends copy

We truly don’t know where life is going to take us. Whether it’s to new adventures or to places that we couldn’t possibly imagine being. But there’s one thing that’s for sure, good friends will always make this journey called life worthwhile. This is truly the case through my recent times as a freelancer. Starting out, I had no clue how I was going to be able to be a freelance designer, would I be able to find work? Would I have the capabilities to look after projects and be smart with my time and money? Will I be able to have money to live! (It was all good! I had savings for this time!) Those were all things that were just coursing through my head, a never ending stream of doubt, questions, concerns. But, having doubt isn’t a sign that you’re not capable, it’s just a product of fear that we can have as human beings that cause us to analyse the situation. So I did what seem like a good idea, which was to reach out to those wiser than me.

13/12/2015

Hey there friends!

It is officially now the 12 day count down till Christmas! How crazy is that? We truly feel that this year has flown by and we’re amazed that it’s gone so fast. We’re also very happy that Christmas is now officially around the corner, well, simply because, we love Christmas!

There’s just something about the bright lights, the Christmas songs, the cheesy Christmas movies that are constantly on T.V. It brings a sense of joy and fun that we love to embrace. And of course, it’s the best time of the year to be grateful of the gift of hope, love and joy in the form of baby Jesus!

Thought we would share some fun ideas for the Christmas season. Here’s a little idea that we came up with to add your personal touch to your tree. Some lettered baubles!

Choose your phrase to letter and use a permanent marker or even a white or gold pen.

Writing the words can be quite tricky! But give it some time and paitence and you’ll get it! It’s not about making it perfect, it’s about making it something fun that you’ll like to put on your tree. Maybe even add some spots or star bursts around the letters.

There you have it! A quick and simple way to add a little bit of personality to your Christmas tree! You could even do it as a gift from someone that you love. Make sure you take a photo and tag us on facebook or instagram!

Peace, joy and love!

Free to Be

Free to Be Concert 2015 (80 of 90)

Free to Be Concert 2015 (26 of 90)
Happy Friday! Last month we had the opportunity to be a part of an awesome event which saw a bunch of passionate people work together for an important cause. We had the chance to play a part in the Light FM sponsored Free to Be concert, an event where local artists came together to sing, dance and perform to fight for the freedom for those trapped in human trafficking. We were overjoyed that we could contribute to something that we felt so passionate about, freedom and the arts. We know what you’re thinking, Val and Vess can sing and dance?!  No we haven’t been hiding a singing talent, we left that to the professionals! We were lucky to lend our talents to assist the absolutely wonderful Red Hong Yi!

Colour Melbourne

27/10/2015

“Purer colours… have in themselves, independently of the objects they serve to express, a significant action on the feelings of those who look at them.”

-Henri Matisse

Colour is beautiful, it’s valuable and it means to so much to us in a practical, spiritual and emotional sense.
You may have recently seen on Instagram and Facebook, we’ve decided to start an ongoing search for colourful walls in Melbourne.

Why?

Perhaps because no one else is.val-footscray-arts-centre-11

Melbournians are known to dress super minimal and monochrome (a fashion trend which never seemed to fit my repertoire) and fashion bloggers of Melbourne do the same. Most take photos of beautiful black and white attire in front of white or grey walls, looking ultra sleek and suave. If you want ideas for locations to take photos like this let me know, I have a few up my sleeve.

I love Instagram, don’t get me wrong, but what irks me is the lack of colour. People tend to commit to images of just black and white to in order to gain a sublime and minimalist feel. Which I don’t condone, I just know that it’s something which Big Picture Stuff isn’t at all.val-footscray-arts-centre-3

So now you have the back story. My idea didn’t take root until I connected with the ever so lovely Rosie from Rclayton (check out her amazing Instagram, it will seriously blow you away) who I believe resides in the sunny part of either Chicago or California. The amount of COLOUR bursting from her Instagram simply stole my heart and made me yearn to either buy a ton of paint, become a graffiti artist or move to L.A to chase my dreams of an Instagram rainbow.

But, in a sweet Instagram exchange Rosie encouraged us to “find the colour in your city, you just have to look”.val-footscray-arts-centre

Never one to shy from a challenge I took it upon myself to do just that, hence our hashtag #COLOURMELBOURNE

So you know the drill, if you find a colourful wall in Melbourne use the hashtag. Doesn’t have to be extremely amazing, it could even be the side of your local Officeworks, it just has to have a bit of colour that inspires and brings joy to your day!

Here’s some colourful walls we’ve found so far.
